For this simple
guide to wines we'll divide the different wines into
the following; Red, Rose, Blush, White, Sparkling,
Dessert.
Red Wines:
Fermented with the skin and pips
from black grapes. Styles vary from light and
refreshing through to heavier fortified sweet wines.
Examples: Cabernet Sauvignon, a full-flavoured,
intense, black-currant red produced from the Cabernet
Sauvignon grape.
Pinot Noir, delicious cherry and raspberry
flavours for a silkier, more mellow experience.
Syrah/Shiraz, New World wine grapes are plump
for a deep, rich, full-bodied red.
Rose Wines:
Made from black grapes but without stalks. The juice
is then separated off until it is sufficiently pink
in colour. Some of the best rosés are produced
from the Grenache grape and are deliciously refreshing
and fragrant.
Blush Wines:
Of Californian origin produced
mainly from the Zinfandel grape. The skins
of the black grapes are immersed briefly, with the
must. The result is a pinkish-blue colour.
White Wines:
Made from black or white grapes, White
wine styles vary so much and range from the very dry
to golden sweet.
Muscadet and Verdicchio
grapes make dry, crisp white wines.
Sauvignon Blanc grapes make
a tangy, zesty white wine.
A blend of Sémillon and
Sauvignon Blanc makes a richer, nuttier
flavoure white wine.
Chardonnay grapes deliver
ripe, tropical fruit flavoured white wines.
Alsace Gewürztraminer.
Deliciously aromatic spiciness is a white wine worth
trying.
Sparkling Wines:
Genuine Champagne is the perfect
example of a sparkling wine. It starts life as a dry
table wine then a yeast and sugar solution
is added to create the best of the sparkling wines.
Finally the wine is sealed for secondary fermentation.
