Many
of us need only look at our close families, friends
and neighbours to see adverse effects in our health
and lifestyles. Much is attributed to pollution
from the elements, we have re-used traditional words
for modern situations - 'stress' for example was
once used as an engineering term, now it is used
for a kind of pressure we are placed under. Did
our grandparents suffer from stress?.
'Green'
words and phrases are entering our vocabulary on
a daily basis; 'friendly bacteria' for example.
The word 'medicine' has prefixes now;
'over
the counter medicine, alternative medicine,
complimentary medicine and a big debate by
G.P's as to the real benefits of natural and holistic
medicines will no doubt continue forever. At least
we have living
proof that many natural health products work.
It
is a safe bet to say that almost everyone knows
someone that suffers from; Eczema, Psoriasis, Fibromyalgia,
Acne Rosacea, Colitis, Diverticulitis, Irritable
Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Pulled Muscles or Joint Pain,
Back Pain, Arthritis, Frozen Shoulder, Bursitis,
Crohn's Disease or the effects of cancer treatment,
Hay Fever, Sinusitis, Asthma, Bronchitis .... and
more.
Then
we have the 'Couch Potato' syndrome, poor diets
and lack of exercise open up another can of worms.
Doctors' waiting rooms are a testiment to many seeking
'sick notes' to take a day or so off work ... often
due to over-indulgence. On the other end of the
spectrum we have the majority who really do want
to stay healthy, look good and keep fit and they
are prepared to seek professional advice to achieve
this.
Although
we endure these new illnesses our attitudes have
certainly changed, more and more people are taking
responsibility for their own health and well-being
and not awaiting the doctor to prescribe drugs.
We have a growing number of people in Britain that
are now looking to a more complementary, preventative
and self-help approach to health.
Whilst
we have focussed upon illness more than anything
else, it is a tiny part of the health products market.
Look at Aloe Vera based products, together with
products from the beehive, nutritional, personal
care, weight management, animal care, skin care
and beauty products.
Men
in the UK could easily be more conscious of their
image than women. We have only got to look in WH
Smith at men's lifestyle magazines such as Arena,
Esquire, FHM, GQ, Ralph, Loaded, Maxim, Men's Health,
etc, just to see that there are more male lifestyle
magazines than female! A recent study shows that
25% of readers of Cosmopolitan, the female fashion
magazine, are actually men.
